What happens to the panel edge after the saw
Every circular saw leaves a surface on the panel edge that is anything but flat. To the naked eye it can look acceptable. After a few months of use on the finished piece of furniture, you see it clearly for what it is: a series of micro-chips, irregularities and open pores.
On chipboard and MDF the problem is structurally worse than on solid wood. The material crumbles at the cut edge. The resulting porous surface is full of voids that the glue film cannot cover uniformly.
The result is predictable: a visible joint, uneven adhesion, edge banding that lifts — most often on short edges, which suffer the most during pressing.
Pre-milling solves this problem upstream, before the edge band even touches the panel. Not downstream, with finishing.
How the Diamond Cutter Group Works
The grinding pass that prepares the surface for gluing
The pre-milling unit is positioned at the infeed of the edge bander, ahead of the gluing unit. Every panel passes through it before receiving glue and edge band.
The diamond cutters work on the panel edge, removing a controlled layer of material — from 0.5 to 2.0 mm — depending on the quality of the incoming cut. Counter-rotation relative to the panel’s feed direction ensures a clean cut, with no tearing.
The result is a geometrically flat surface, free of open pores and micro-irregularities: a surface that the glue film covers uniformly, with no voids.

When Pre-Milling Is Essential — and When You Can Consider Other Options
An honest guide to choosing the right model
We decided to give this article a very direct title. The honest answer, of course, is more nuanced. And more useful.
The pre-milling unit isn’t indispensable in absolute terms. It becomes so depending on the panel you work with, the quality level you want to guarantee, and the volumes you produce.
Pre-milling is essential when:
- You work mainly with plywood, melamine-faced chipboard and melamine-faced MDF — the material that crumbles at the cut makes pre-milling a condition for stable adhesion, not an optional extra,
- You produce contract-grade or high-end furniture, where a zero-gap joint is a requirement,
- Your volumes are high enough that every minute of finishing work eliminated adds up significantly.
You can consider other options when:
- You work mainly with MDF with well-finished cut edges and entry-level quality requirements
- Your volumes are low and the quality difference doesn’t affect the positioning of the finished product
- You work with solid wood with an edge that’s already clean coming out of the machine

Pre-Milling and Glue — a Combination That Multiplies
Clean surface + the right glue = a result you can see and measure
Pre-milling and the choice of glue aren’t independent decisions. On a pre-milled surface, the glue film — EVA or PUR — spreads without discontinuity. That means less glue needed for the same coverage, less waste, and less risk of charring in the glue tank.
With PUR on a pre-milled surface, the zero-gap joint stops being an occasional result and becomes systematically reproducible. It’s the combination that allows kitchen and bathroom panels to keep their edge banding intact over time, even under prolonged heat and humidity.
